Custom Closets Cost: Reach-In, Walk-In and Built-In Closets
A custom closet is one of the upgrades people use every day. Here is what custom closets cost, what custom closet installation adds, and how a built-in closet compares with a modular system.
Custom closets cost by type
- Reach-in closet: about $500 to $3,000, according to Angi.
- Walk-in closet: about $1,000 to $8,000 nationally, with a 50 sq ft primary walk-in near $5,000 in Angi's table.
- National average: about $2,127 for a custom closet installation.
- Design: professional closet design runs $400 to $1,200 when it is billed separately.
What moves the price
- Size and layout. More wall means more cabinetry, and L or U-shaped walk-ins add corners.
- Material. Laminate and melamine systems cost less than painted wood or stained hardwood.
- Drawers and doors. Drawer banks, glass doors and an island cost more than open shelves and hanging rods.
- Extras. Lighting, mirrors, valet rods and jewelry trays.
Built-in closet or closet system?
A modular system is made of standard parts that hang on rails or sit on the floor. A built-in closet is made for the room, scribed to the walls and ceiling, and finished like furniture. It costs more, but it fits sloped ceilings and odd corners, and it lasts.
Our closets are built in our Mashpee shop and installed by our own team. See walk-in and reach-in work on our custom closets page.
